Short end bend

A sheet bend is a great knot to join two ropes together. Unfortunately is hard to remember what order the over/under parts go in. This alternative method of tying the sheet bend avoids having to memorize a list of crossings.

The riggers worst nightmare. You get to the end and although you do have enough rope to join the ends together, there is not enough rope to tie a knot.

Don’t panic. You can still tie them together in a sheet bend. You just need a different method than what is normally used.

Tie a slipknot in one end. You can see that the end of the rope can be right snug next to the knot.

Put the other end through the loop of the slipknot.

Fold the end back on itself.

Reach over and grab the slipknot.

Slide the slipknot over. The slipknot will flip over on itself and “swallow” the folded part.

The final knot is a sheet bend. Notice that the ends are both nearly flush with the outside of the knot. Tying a sheet bend in the usual way would require a lot more rope for the tails.
