Philadelphia

Also known as the fire escape knot because it is a fast way to make a series of hand holds in a climbing rope. (Strangely enough, I also learned this is called the double bowline. This comes as quite a shock to me.) This is the knot I get asked about over and over all the time.

philly_1.jpgCenter the rope and hold it so the ends come down across the palm of your right hand.

philly_2.jpgGrab the ends using your left hand with the palm facing away.

philly_3.jpgFlip your left hand over. This creates a loop in the ends.

philly_4.jpgSlide the loop onto your right hand.

philly_5.jpgYou can tell the loop is in the correct direction if the ropes against the bottom edge of your hand are symmetrical. The ropes in your palm are on the left and on the right. The ropes across the back of your hand is in the middle.

philly_6.jpgContinue adding loops for as many knots you want to make. Notice that the bottom edge of your hand is alternating between the palm and the back of the hand.

philly_7.jpgPlace the ends of the ropes between the index and middle fingers of your right hand.

philly_8.jpgWith your left hand, grip all the coils firmly at the bottom of the right hand. The thumb of the left hand should be by the wrist of the right hand.

philly_9.jpgPull your right hand out of the coils. The ends of the rope come with it.

philly_10.jpgPull slowly and evenly on the end of the rope that just came through all of the coils. Each coil will collapse into a knot one at a time.

philly_11.jpgUse your left hand to adjust the tension of the coils so that only one coil will come through at a time.

philly_12.jpgContinue pulling until every coil has transformed into a knot. You now have the starting foundation of a kadara body harness.
