Lapp on surface
Sometimes a knot needs to be tied so it is snug up against a surface. This can be done with a lapp knot, shown in this example being tied into a blindfold.
Fold one side back on itself making a bunny ear. Treat this side as if it were just a single piece.
Tie an overhand knot. Note that the index and middle fingers are gripping the bunny ear from the inside. This is becomes important later.
With the hand that is not griping the bunny ear, place your thumb against the overhand knot. This will hold it snugly in place while doing the second half of the knot.
While hold your thumb in place, pass the single end across and into your other hand where it will be pinched by index and middle fingers in a scissor grip.
Pull your index and middle fingers out, taking the single end with it. Note that in this example the single end is not passed all the way through. The single end will function as a ‘ripcord’ if left like this, making untying very easy .
Now to tighten it up. Grab the trailing end of the bunny ear and pull. The bunny ear will close up at the spot where your thumb is. Remember to take your thumb off at the last instant so it dosne’t get trapped in the bunny ear.
