Japanrope coil
This coil is not very practical. It will tend to come undone in your toybag, doesn’t pack well, and occasionally jams up when you try and uncoil it. However, it is pretty. UPDATE: It has come to my attention that this kind of coil is called a “Pear Coil” by some sources. I am doing more research on this but I think the name “japanrope coil” is the name that will stick for us westerners.
Start by griping the rope about 10 or so centimeters (4 or 5 inches) from the end. If doing this with a doubled rope, start with a bunny-ear poking up at the centerpoint of the rope.
Pick up the trailing end of the rope and make a loop of whatever size coil you want to make.
Here starts a three step process.
ONE) bring the rope in front of the end.
TWO) Pass the rope behind the end.
THREE) Pass the rope in front of the end again. Place the rope into your other hand.
Pick up the trailing end of the rope again. You may need to adjust how much rope you pick up to match the size of the previous coil.
The three step process happens again just below the first one.
ONE) bring the rope in front of the end.
TWO) Pass the rope behind the end.
THREE) Pass the rope in front of the end again. Place the rope into your other hand.
Keep picking up the end again and again, each time adjusting it to the size of the coil you want and doing the three step process around the end. Each time you do it, make it just below the one you previously did.
When you get to the other end of the rope (or to both ends if you are doing this on a doubled rope) Make a bunny ear across the tip of your finger.
Poke your finger up into the coil pushing the bunny-ear up with it. When this is pulled back out again, the whole coil will come apart on its own.
