Recently, while out at a restraunt with a group of friends, I caught a glimps of a potentionaly dammage situation. The checks had come and everyone was paying. One person paid with a credit card. When the waiter came back after processing the card he was unable to remember who he had got the card from. So he just read the name off the card out loud to get the attention of the card owner.
The persons real name. First and last.
Thankfuly everyone in the group was fairly “out” to everyone else. But one person present (the guy who taught me the Mexican Handcuff by the way) told of a similar situation he remembered where a person had his name said out loud by a waiter and that person had never gone by anything else but his scene name.
Perverts are notoriously paranoid about people finding out their name. This leads to situations where one person can be identified by their real name, their scene name, their screen name, or a host of other names. For someone like me who is bad with names to begin with, it just gets me confused. Even people who I have known for years, I will occasionally get stuck for their name.
Mostly people hide their names do to privavy concerns. But I should also mention that we as a group were out having desert folowing a workshop. The topic was puppyplay and one of the issues covered was distinguising between your ‘pet’ name and any other one would regulary go by. Going by a difrent name during a spicific kind of scene can aid a lot into putting you into the right mindset.
There is yet another reason why people would hide their name. Shame.
Usualy this comes in the form of a middle name that is piticulary embarasing. Teashing and harasement over a kids middle name is a childhood right of pasage. Though I do know a few folks with a piticularly embarasing first namewho go by their middle name.
Why is it that people will hide their middle name? Its certinaly not because they are mindless drones who just read in the bible that middle names are shameful and blindly believe what they read. Its not because middle names are something only bad and immoral people have. Yet for some reason we still find middle names shameful enough that they should be hidden.
Where are the protest groups marching in the street demanding that society must change and stop being so judgmental toward middle names? Where are the in-your-face indigent advocates screaming that anyone who dosen’t openly embrace their middle name is a bigot and a hate monger? Where are the assumptions that anyone hiding their middle name must obviously be a close minded prude?
