Last month, anticapation was building over the latest burst ouf indignant outrage. Madaonna was getting ready to do something sexualy ranuchy. And we all know how much contreversy that creats. And we know it is going to be contreversal because Madonnas publicist said it was going to be contreversal. The article quotes ‘An on-set source revealed: Itss absolutely classic Madonna. Probably the raunchiest stuff she has ever done. It leaves nothing to the imagination and will be very controversial.’ Folowed quickly by claiming ‘There will be big rows over whether it is sexy, shocking or both.’
Contreversy here we come!
Fimilar formula. Madonna simulates masterbation on stage durring a concert and the christian right is outraged. Madonna Publishes the book ’sex’ and the christian right is outraged. Madonna releases the video to ‘Erotica’ that is filled with bdsm sex and the christian right is outraged. Madonna kisses Britiny and the christian right is outraged. You would almost think that she was doing it on purpose just to creat artificial publicity for herself. But such reasoning is just crazy talk. After all, we all know that ‘the church frouns on sex’ after all. Madonna said so herself in a rolling stone interview. The contrversy TOTALY stems from the fact that all christians are close minded prudes.
Er …. Ok …. We will also have to ignore for the moment that Madaona also created contreversy with the ‘like a prayer’ video for sacriliogious images of crosses and stigmata. And also ignore the contreversy from the cover of ‘american pie’ that sparked critisim from others besides the christian right …… those were just minor inconsistancies. The REAL truth is that those evil right wing christians just hate everythign and anythign having to do with sex.
So here comes bondage sex onstage with Britiny. This is surely going to piss off the christian right more than anything else ever. Why there will be rioting in the streets. Cars on fire and lines of riot police. Those fundementalist christians are obssesed ya know. They will never stop ever untill all sexual expression is stamped out. Just you watch. The contreversy is going to be huge.
A month later. The tour has opened. Crickets chirp in the background. A tumbleweed blows past.
Ok, so there is a bit of contreversy comming from the right wing. But it is because she compares John McCain to Hitler (I call godwins!) and not because of anythign sexual. But how could this be? After all, right wingers are totaly obsesed with stamping out any and all forms of sexuality. How come BDSM sex isnt making front page headlines for weeks on end the same way it did when the ’sex’ book came out?
Well, long term readers of this webpage will realise its just part of the 70-80 year loop that sexual expresion goes through. The 80s and 90s were the height of sexuality being in the public eye, and with it protest againt sexuality. But as we enter a generation of sexual burnout people just dont care as much aboitu sexual issues as they used to. And with that decline comes a decline in the voices of oposition.
Actualy Madaonnas career very much mirrored the carrer of flapper era star Mae West. Both made their first public apperence at the tail end of a ’sexual revolution’. The gay ninties and the hippy movement. Both were the media darlings durring the hypersexed generation they represented. The flapper era of the 20s and 30s. the ‘coke and hooker’ generation of the 80’s and 90’s. Both drew strong critisim from moral groups that only served to highten their popularity. Both started to go down hill when world military conflict took over public thinking. World War 2 and the war on teriosim. With an increased sense of political urgency, as well as just suffering from burnout by the sear number of sex scandles hitting them day after day, people just gave up paying attention to sex. And with the drop in public attention, the voice of the outraged moral groups began to fade. If history is iny indacator, Madaonna will fade from public eye for 20 or 30 years while sexual privacy rights take hold, only to return late in life when the next sexual revolution hits sometime around the year 2040.
Or you could go with the other theory. Just hold out the hope that christians are going to flip out after all. The REAL contreversy is comming at the Video Music Awards where Madaons is planning a 3-way lesbian bondage scene with Lindsay Lohan and Jessica Simpson. Just you wait. The christian right is going to totaly flip out when they see that. Then we will have proven once and for all how prudish and victrorian minded those evil christians realy are. Riots in the streets here we come!
