Barbie Girl
A bunch of fundementalists religious nuts are complaining that barbie dolls are too sexual. Just more of the same old ‘wont someone think of the children’ hysteria.
Fox news reported that the ‘Committee for the Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice’ lists Barbie among items that it finds to be moraly offensive. The groups website says in part “their revealing clothes and shameful postures, accessories and tools are a symbol of decadence to the perverted”.
The groups holds a lot of influnce over government and they have preasured police into going into stores and confscating the doll. Of corse this dosent get rid of the doll. It just pushes it onto the black-market where it is selling for $27 or higher.
The group is also supporting a propaganda campaign in the schools. Anti Barbie posters are distributed to the schools and are being hung in public. One of the top anti-barbie spokesmen stated ‘It is no problem that little girls play with dolls. But these dolls should not have the developed body of a woman and wear revealing clothes’
The outcry is actualy a bit redundant, as the doll has been baned nationwide for over 10 years.
No no no, not THAT Barbie. Not the doll christian groups are calling filth. Thats the one that the entire kink comunity is up in arms over with ‘how dare of them to judge’ and ‘why do christians hate sex so much’. I was talking about Barbie being baned in Saudi Arabia
Its easy to get the two mixed up. They are both fundementalist religious zealots claiming that they are doing what they do in order to ‘protect the children’. Both groups claim that the doll is overtly sexual, immoral, and offesnive. Both were reported on by fox news.
However, the christian group hasent been able to force the government into a nation wide ban. They are not putting up propaganda posters in schools. They arnt using the police to enter stores and confiscate the dolls. Oh, and they arnt saying that the whole thing is an plot by the evil jews to destroy civilization. In fact, all that they have ever done was make a statement in a phone interview to a newspaper. They haven’t even done so much as issue a press statement.
I tried to track down the original quote. News reports all claim that the group ‘Christian voice’ is the one pusing the anti-barbie retoric. However, the Christian Voice website has no mention of Barbie. If this group was so outraged by this new barbie dolls, you would think they would express it more publicly. But then I learned that this outcry didnt originate from them at all.
The story first broke in the U.K. supermarket tabloid ‘The Sun’. So the group ‘christian voice’ is not the american christian voice, but rather the U.K. orgnizarion named christian voice. VERY difrent. The american group does bost a moderate amount of membership and does have slight lobying powers, but the UK orgnization of the same name is run by ONE guy. Spokesman, president, and as far as anyone can tell, the only member. A guy named Stephen Green. A guy even other chirstians consider a full fleged nutcase.
But even his personal homepage dosent mention anything about Barbie. So where the heck did the quote come from in the first place? Well ‘The Sun’ is a tabloid remember. Not above just intentionaly creating a story on their own in order to have something to report. Turns out The Sun called Stephen Green to ask what he thought about the new Barbie. They knew damn well in advance what his answer would be, but phoned him up anyway in order to ‘make’ a story.
So its not ‘christian groups’ protesting the new S&M Barbie. Its not even A chistian group. Its one guy. And he is not so much leading a charge againt the doll as much as just giving an on the fly opinion to questions asked by a supermarket tabloid.
Talk about making moutians out of molehills!
Lets recap? Shall we? One lone guy who isnt even in america makes a bonehead comment to a tabloid about one doll (a comment that he isnt even backing up by any other action on his part) that is proof that american is the most opresive and puriticanal police state in all of history. But a state sponsered religious group using police force and propaganda posters in school to combat Barbie in a nation wide ban somehow goes unnoticed by the kink comunity.
In fact, just by pointing out that sexual opresion is bigger in Saudi Arabia than it is in america is probably going to get me acused of being ‘intolerant towards muslims’.
